Leonardo was the out-of-wed child of Messer / Ser (meaning Master) Piero da Vinci, a young notary, and Caterina Lippi, a sixteen-year-old orphan, and poor young girl from the Vinci district, Anchiano near the town of Vinci. He was born in. Before the establishment of modern naming rules in Europe, his full name to the world is Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, which means «Leonardo, son of Master Piero of Vincili». He signed his works as «Leonardo» or «Io, Leonardo (I, Leonardo)».
Although there is no concrete evidence, it is presumed that Leonardo’s mother, Caterina, was a Middle Eastern slave belonging to her father Piero. His father married his first wife named Albiera in the year Leonardo was born. Leonardo was cared for by his mother when he was a baby, and when his mother moved to the neighboring town after marrying someone else, he lived in his grandfather’s house, which his father rarely visited; from time to time he would go to Florence to his father’s house. Since his father had no children from his first wife, he was accepted into the family, but he did not receive love from anyone in the family except his uncle, Francesco.

The illegitimate son of a 25-year-old notary, Ser Piero, and a peasant girl, Caterina, Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy, just outside Florence. His father took custody of him shortly after his birth.
Growing up in his father’s Vinci home, Leonardo had access to scholarly texts owned by family and friends. He was also exposed to Vinci’s longstanding painting tradition, and when he was about 15 his father apprenticed him to the renowned workshop of Andrea del Verrochio in Florence. Even as an apprentice, Leonardo demonstrated his great talent. Indeed, his genius seems to appear in a number of pieces produced by the Verrocchio’s workshop from the period 1470 to 1475. For example, one of Leonardo’s first big breaks was to paint an angel in Verrochio’s «Baptism of Christ,» and Leonardo was so much better than his master’s that Verrochio allegedly resolved never to paint again. Leonardo stayed in the Verrocchio workshop until 1477.
Seeking to make a living, and new challenges, he entered the service of the Duke of Milan in 1482, abandoning his first commission in Florence, «The Adoration of the Magi». He spent 17 years in Milan, leaving only after Duke Ludovico Sforza’s fall from power in 1499. It was during these years that Leonardo reached new heights of scientific and artistic achievement.

The earliest known dated work of Leonardo’s is a drawing done in pen and ink of the Arno valley, drawn on 5 August 1473. It is assumed that he had his own workshop between 1476 and 1478, receiving two orders during this time. From around 1482 to 1499, Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan , employed Leonardo and permitted him to operate his own workshop, complete with apprentices. It was here that seventy tons of bronze that had been set aside for Leonardo’s «Gran Cavallo» horse statue (see below) were cast into weapons for the Duke in an attempt to save Milan from the French under Charles VIII in 1495.
Renaissance humanism saw no mutually exclusive polarities between the sciences and the arts, and Leonardo’s studies in science and engineering are as impressive and innovative as his artistic work, recorded in notebooks comprising some 13,000 pages of notes and drawings, which fuse art and science. These notes were made and maintained through Leonardo’s travels through Europe, during which he made continual observations of the world around him. He was left-handed and used mirror writing throughout his life. This is explainable by the fact that it is easier to pull a quill pen than to push it; by using mirror-writing, the left-handed writer is able to pull the pen from right to left and also avoid smudging what has just been written. He wrote in his diaries (journals) using mirror writing. His approach to science was an observational one: he tried to understand a phenomenon by describing and depicting it in utmost detail, and did not emphasize experiments or theoretical explanation. Since he lacked formal education in Latin and mathematics, contemporary scholars mostly ignored Leonardo the scientist, although he did teach himself Latin. It has also been said that he was planning a series of treatises to be published on a variety of subjects though none were ever done.

The museum was inaugurated on October 2, 1993, under the patronage of the Regione Toscana, Provincia di Firenze, and the Municipality of Vinci. Support was provided by the Armand Hammer Center for Leonardo Studies (University of California at Los Angeles) and Raccolta Vinciana [it].
The museum was founded by scholars and artists as the first museum dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. His works as an artist, scientist, inventor, and designer are explored through the theory of the Imaginary Museum.[clarification needed] The museum has developed exhibitions such as:
The museum is located within the Conti Guidi castle [it] in Vinci, in the province of Florence, Italy. In 1868, as recorded by Giuseppi Garabaldi, ownership of the castle was shared with the counts of Masetti da Bagnano and the counts Guidi. Opposite the museum entrance is the former location of a mill (with a millpond) that was operated by Leonardo’s father Ser Piero and his uncle Francesco, beginning in 1478. The nineteenth-century portion of the building was built on the foundations of the millpond owned by the city and by the da Vinci family.
